Whether you are getting married in one of our beautiful venues or having a religious ceremony in a church there is paperwork that you need to complete in advance of the big day.

Marriage notice forms must be completed within the three months before the wedding and submitted to the relevant registration office at least 14 clear days before the wedding. The same timescales apply for civil partnership notice forms. You can get these from any of the South Lanarkshire Council Licensing and Registration Offices , from any registration office in Scotland or from the National Records of Scotland (formerly the General Register Office for Scotland).   Have a look at Getting married in Scotland and Registering a civil partnership in Scotland for more information.

Once you have booked your venue, if you have decided that you would like a registrar to conduct your wedding or civil partnership ceremony, contact any of the South Lanarkshire Council Licensing and Registration Offices to check availability.  The busiest days for ceremonies are Fridays and Saturdays and the busiest period from April to October.

After you have made the booking you will be given a booking reference number and you will be asked for a deposit. You can use this reference number to pay your deposit and the remaining balance online. Costs will differ depending on the number of people attending, the venue, the time and day of the week you have chosen.

A renewal of vows ceremony is a renewal of the vows/ promises you made when you were first joined in marriage/ partnership. It can be a meaningful and touching ceremony for you and your children, family and friends.

As a couple, it is a time to pause and reflect on where you have been and where you are going. It is also a wonderful example to set for your children and grandchildren. Can you imagine a more beautiful scene than children watching their parents joining hands and hearts as they reaffirm the magnitude and strength of their enduring love? What greater life lesson?

Renewal of vows ceremonies can be as creative and personal as you want them to be. Walk down the aisle to classical music and walk out to “your song”.

Let the cover of your invitation feature your grandchild’s favourite drawing of Grandma and Grandpa or even your first ceremony portrait. Play your original ceremony video at your reception. Buy new rings for the occasion and have them specially engraved.

Your ceremony can be very formal, or more casual depending on your preference. It can completely reflect who you are.

Significant anniversaries are especially appropriate times for renewing your commitment and love. There is no set time. If it feels right, do it!

There is a fee to pay for notifying the marriage. The cost is £30 each for the bride and groom, and the marriage certificate costs £10. If you are being married by a registrar, a solemnisation fee of £55 will also be charged. Similar fees apply for notifying a civil partnership and for the registration of the partnership.  Information on fees is contained in these information leaflets - Marriage in Scotland - what you would pay and Civil partnership in scotland - what you would pay.

There will also be additional fees for the services of a registrar to conduct your marriage or civil partnership ceremony. Costs will differ depending on the number of people attending, the venue, the time and day of the week you have chosen.

In cases of religious weddings, please ask the religious celebrant for information about any applicable charges.

Why not celebrate your civil partnership with a commitment ceremony declaring your life-long commitment to one another? For more information please refer the documents as provided by National Records of Scotland
